Foreman punches way to matchplay title

Christian Foreman, the fourth generation of his family to be a professional golfer, used all his families golfing genes to secure the PGA East Region Trainees’ Matchplay – sponsored by PGA East Region patron Geoff Irvine.Bunker Shot

The Rochford Hundred assistant, who has just completed his first year training, beat Kieran James of Bush Hill Park one up in the final after trailing in the early stages at Harpenden Golf Club. In the semi-final, played the same morning, Foreman beat Will Shaw of Aldeburgh 5 and 4.”I haven’t played much competitive golf this year because I have been concentrating on my course work,” said the victor. “I hope to play much more in regional events next year.

“I fell behind early in both matches. In the final I was one down with three to play. He dropped a shot on the 17th and then I needed to sink a four-foot putt on the last green to win.”

Foreman’s closest match in the event came in the first round when he beat Simon Gorry of Sudbury (Middlesex) at the seventh extra hole at Rochford Hundred. Gorry was losing finalist in the English Amateur Championship at Woodhall Spa in 1998.

In the other semi-final Kieran James beat his friend and colleague from Bush Hill Park, Nicholas Chrisostomou, 4 and 3. Shaw beat Chrisostomou at the first extra hole in the play-off for third place. Shaw sunk a 15-foot curling uphill putt for birdie from the edge of the green to win.

Foreman is the grandson of the late Roger Foreman who finished tied 16th in the Open Championship at Royal Troon in 1962 and is the fourth generation of his family to be professional golfers. His elder brother Ashley is also starting his second year of training at Ballards Gore.

Foreman’s knockout blow

Christian Foreman of Rochford Hundred, a first year assistant, won the rearranged PGA East Region Championship Pro-Am with a three-under-par round of 69 at Nazeing.

An eagle at the 523-yard par five 18th hole put him two shots clear of four players who finished at one-under-par.Golf Scoreboard

Last week Foreman received his trophy from PGA captain Jim Farmer at the PGA East Region’s captain’s dinner at Bishop’s Stortford for his success in the region’s trainees’ match play.

The players at one under par were Neil McLauchlan (Bushey Golf and Country Club), Stuart Lunn-Walker (Rayleigh Golf Range), Jason Groat (Denver Golf Centre) and the unattached PGA European Seniors’ Tour player Tony Charnley.

McLauchlan had a mixed first nine with five birdies, two bogeys and one double. Groat, starting at the 10th, had four back to back birdies from the 16th but had already dropped four shots in a costly run on holes 12, 13 and 14.

Thomas Simm of John O’Gaunt Golf Club led the winning team at 14-under-par. They beat the amateurs with Joe Braddon (Tilsworth Golf Centre) by one shot. Third place at 12 under par was shared by amateurs with the unattached Finbarr Madden and Groat.

REPORT FROM THE ESSEX ASSISTANTS MATCHPLAY FINAL

The Assistants Matchplay Final between Matt King of Hartswood and Christian Foreman of Rochford at Colchester on Wednesday 28th October produced golf to match the perfect conditions with Christian the eventual winner at the second extra hole.

Golf SwingThis result seemed most unlikely as he was on the receiving end of a barrage of birdies on the front nine where he was 3 down and by the 14th this had increased to dormy 4 down despite recording successive birdies himself on 9, 10 and 11. A birdie at the stroke index 1 15th kept Foreman’s hopes alive. A magnificent up and down at the 16th where Matt three putted halved the deficit and when Matt repeated his three putt on the 17th the momentum was with him. A further birdie at the 18th squared the match, after Matt’s birdie chance to finish the match lipped out. The 19th was halved in par and then with a birdie 4 at the 20th Christian claimed the prize when he holed from 15 feet from the fringe.

Christian is the 4th member of the Foreman family to have won this particular trophy which is a tremendous feat. Well done Christian and hard luck to Matt.
